Children and Adolescents
For children under the age of 15, I recommend in-person sessions only, and I do offer online sessions for teens as well (although in person sessions are preferred). Counseling for young people can differ from that for adults, tailored to the specific challenges, age, and developmental needs of each child.
At times, children and teens may find it difficult to express what’s bothering them, either because it’s too overwhelming or because they haven’t yet developed the ability to articulate their emotions. In such cases, I employ various techniques such as psychoeducation, metaphors, and storytelling to help them initially to express their feelings.
Though different methods may be used with children and adolescents, the primary goal of counseling remains the same as with adults: to help the individual manage their experiences and emotions, and ultimately shift their mindset to live a more fulfilling life.
Counseling for children aims to foster a positive outlook on life, encouraging self-respect, acceptance of emotions, and responsible expression. Adolescents, in particular, benefit from learning self-control, developing problem-solving skills, and making positive, independent choices. Sessions typically take place once a week or every 2 weeks to ensure consistency. I offer appointments from Monday to Sunday, with availability during the day, after school, and in the early mornings or evenings for older children and teens. My in-office sessions are held from Sunday to Wednesday in downtown Vancouver.
While this is not an exhaustive list, I have significant experience in helping children and adolescents with the following:
